The Eric Carle Museum, which opened in November 2002, is the first museum of its kind in the United States — a museum devoted to the art we first know as children. The 44,000SF building has a crisp modern character. Building materials include plaster, glass, metal, wood and bluestone flooring, which extends from the interior to exterior terraces. Wood furnishings add warmth to the space. Spaces include: Galleries, offices, library, studio, 130-seat auditorium, museum shop, and café.

Lorin Starr was the interior designer for the architect during the original design and construction and has continued to provide on-going interior design consulting for the museum, specifically the selection of furnishings in keeping with the original architectural intent,

The Museum was the recipient of a 2004 American Institute of Architecture Western Massachusetts Chapter Honor Award.
